The Exeter Bach Society is an SATB choir based in central Exeter, Devon, specialising in the choral works of Johann Sebastian Bach. We give two or three full-length concerts per year, usually with orchestral support, with additional recitals of Bach’s Cantatas at Exeter Cathedral and local churches. Recently performed pieces have included Cantata 139 at Exeter Cathedral, Purcell’s Ode to St Cecilia, and Bach’s St Matthew Passion.
Our current musical director, David Davies, joined the society in September 2012. As a graduate of Eton, Oxford and Yale, and as current Assistant Director of Music at Exeter Cathedral, David brings with him a wealth of experience and expertise, both from the UK and further afield. David is also an accomplished organist, and we were privileged to showcase his talents as part of our summer 2013 concert, Music in May, at St Mark’s Church, Pinhoe.
Our latest concert performance comprised an assortment of celebratory music for St Cecilia’s day, slightly belated, on Saturday 23rd November 2013. This term we will present Bach’s St John Passion on 29th March at the Mint Methodist Church, Exeter, supported by local musicians and soloists. You can find more details on our events page. We will also give a third concert on Saturday 17th May 2014 at Killerton Chapel. We have no Cantatas in our diary for the coming months; so if your church is based in Exeter and might be interested in having us perform as part of a Sunday evensong, please do get in touch with a committee member and we’ll see what we can do!
